Endless miles of aquamarine coastline, sun-kissed ancient ruins – the Greek landscape thrills. Cover a multitude of noteworthy ancient sites, majestic monuments, mystical monasteries and of course divine food and wine. Greece is the focus of our 2018 Europe adventure, but you will also be experiencing the beauty of Croatia and exploring the canals of Venice on this JTW Tour.

Our 10 nights’ on board Star Clippers is sure to be the highlight of your journey. These are true clipper ships reflecting their proud heritage in every inch of their polished brass and gleaming brightwork. Day One // 21st July 2018
Today you will be transferred from your home address in Newcastle to Sydney, to board our overnight flight to Doha.

Day Two // 22nd July 2018
This morning we will arrive into Doha. It’s rare to see a great city in the making these days, but here’s your chance. Whether it’s the stunning and constantly changing skyline or the massive investment the Qatari authorities are making in landmark cultural icons, this is a city oozing confidence and style, as at ease in its modern shopping malls as in its traditional souqs. Upon arrival we will be transferred to our accommodation. With an early check in arranged, we will have access to our rooms straight away so you can rest and recover from an overnight flight. Mid-afternoon, we will take a guided tour of the city, visiting the Souq Waquif and the world-class Museum of Islamic Art. Dinner tonight will be at the hotel.

Day Three // 23rd July 2018
It is an early start today from Doha, as we fly direct into Venice. As one of the world’s most famous destinations, Venice is just made to be explored! Consisting of 118 islands and 150 canals, there’s certainly plenty of ground (and water!) to cover. Upon arrival we will be transferred to our accommodation, with a short cruise along the Grand Canal.  This evening, dinner is included in a local restaurant.

Day Four // 24th July 2018
Sweets lovers and coffee lovers alike will love our adventure this morning as we explore traditional Venetian bakeries! Discover the secrets behind Italian caffè culture and taste some of Venice’s best desserts as you mingle with locals in Cannaregio and Castello. Afterwards, we will have free time at the Rialto Bridge to peruse the markets and shops of the area, before further exploring the city.

This afternoon we will visit St. Mark’s Square to visit the Basilica and it’s Byzantine heritage. Of course, a visit to Venice is not complete without stepping on board a traditional gondola! Our magical day in Venice includes a 40min ride, exploring the canals that make this city famous!

Day Five // 25th July 2018
This morning we will explore the iconic Doge’s Palace on a 2hour guided tour. Delve into the magnificent palace’s history as you explore its lavish public chambers. See prized Italian Renaissance artwork by Tintoretto and Veronese, and learn about the dark deeds of the city’s former rulers and secret service. Then, wander across the world-famous Bridge of Sighs and end your tour with a visit to the New Prisons.

Lunch is included at a local restaurant before we are transferred to check in for our 10 night cruise aboard the Star Flyer. The ship offers spacious accommodation and expansive teak decks with ample space and not one, but two swimming pools. In fact, you will find that these ships offer more outdoor space per passenger than most conventional cruise ships. You can expect a casual elegance on board with fresh cuisine and light-hearted fun. Day Six // 26th July 2018
Port of Call: Cres, Croatia

It’s wild, inspiring and has a natural allure that’s intoxicating. Covered in dense primeval forests, and boasts a rugged coastline of soaring cliffs, hidden coves and ancient hilltop towns. Big skies and huge vistas are very much on the agenda in Cres, and with every road and pathway offering scenery you will be kept amazed.

Day Seven // 27th July 2018
Port of Call: Hvar, Croatia

The island of Hvar is well known for its mild climate and lush subtropical vegetation as well as its cultural and historical monuments. During our shore excursion, we will travel to the highest peak on the island, St Nicola. On a clear day you can see the neighbouring islands of Korcula, Susac, Vis, Brac, Solta, Paklinske and Scedon! The area has a tumultuous past and you will hear tales of pirates, local uprising and the Roman Civil War. We will visit the oldest city in Croatia, Stari Grad and see plenty of this fascinating island.

Day Eight // 28th July 2018
Port of Call: Dubrovnik, Croatia

Regardless of whether you are visiting Dubrovnik for the first time or the hundredth, the sense of awe never fails to descend when you set eyes on the beauty of the old town. On our shore excursion we will stroll through a maze of narrow streets and little squares, visiting parts of the town that are off the tourist radar. During your tour, you will be regaled by stories and legends of Dubrovnik’s Old Town.

Day Nine // 29th July 2018
Port of Call: Kotor, Montenegro

Wedged between brooding mountains and a moody corner of the bay, the achingly atmospheric Kotor is perfectly at one with its setting. It’s a dramatic and delightful place where the past coexists with the present. Our shore excursion will take us to the cathedral of St Triphon, the most impressive building in the old town and first built in 1166. We will also visit the bustling marketplace filled with fresh local produce, before arriving at a family home for a gastronomic experience. Homemade cuisine and a glimpse of family life and traditions are what makes this tour so enjoyable.

Day Ten // 30th July 2018
Port of Call: Corfu, Greece

Due to its strong historical connection with Europe, Corfu island has a cosmopolitan feeling combined with a special traditional character. We will be experiencing Corfu by sea in a traditional Greek ‘Kaliki’ fishing boat, adapted for tourists. Cameras ready because we will pass by some of the most photogenic parts of the island! Sail to Pontikonissi, which houses the Byzantine church of Pantokrator built in the 11th or 12th century; before stopping on Vidos Island, where the unspoilt green island is totally uninhabited – even though it is only half a mile from Corfu Town! Afterwards stroll through the fascinating narrow cobble-stone streets and admire St George’s Palace before returning to the Clipper.

Day Eleven // 31st July 2018
Port of Call: Katakolon, Greece

Graphic, with intense the traditional colour – Katakolon combines mountain and sea. Serving as the gateway to Olympia, today we will explore the lesser known but equally as beautiful sites (as we will spend time at Olympia later on our journey).

Day Thirteen // 2nd August 2018
Port of Call: Santorini

As soon as you arrive at Santorini you are greeted by dramatic views of vertical cliffs of grey lava and white pumice stone rising nearly 1.000ft above the sea. Santorini has become one of the most famous of the Greek Isles simply because of its dramatic beauty. Our shore excursion will take as to Oia, a picturesque village on the northern tip of the island. Its wonderful view of the volcano, narrow streets lined with whitewashed houses and blue domed churches make Oia a photographers delight! A cable car takes us from the attractive town of Fira, down to the harbour to return to the Clipper.

Day Fourteen // 3rd August 2018
Port of Call: Mykonos, Greece

A charming little harbour, lined with cafes and colourful fishing boats, greets the eye and provides a scenic back drop for the maze of narrow cobble stoned streets that lie behind.  On either side of the streets you will find picturesque whitewashed houses, handicraft shops and of course the island’s mascot: the pelican. Be warned, this island casts a spell on all who visit her and your first trip to Mykonos may not be your last!

Day Fifteen // 4th August 2018
Port of Call: Athens, Greece

Ancient and modern, with equal measures of grunge and grace, bustling Athens is an exhilarating mix of history and edginess. Iconic monuments mingle with first-rate museums, lively cafes and al fresco dining are all what you can expect in Athens. This morning we bid farewell to the Star Flyer and will be transferred to our accommodation in the city. This afternoon we will begin our exploration of Athens. Unparalleled history unfolds as you stroll by the Parthenon and other monuments of the Acropolis of Athens; visit the New Acropolis Museum to gawk at ancient statues; and delight in sweeping views of the citadel during an authentic Greek dinner. It’s an afternoon fit for the gods!

Day Sixteen // 5th August 2018
Embark on a culinary journey of taste, colour, smell and texture, right below the striking Acropolis in the heart of Athens’ historic city centre. Our food adventure offers an array of colourful and enticing treats. Visit delicatessens, aromatic bakeries and sweet shops, restaurants, dairies, spice merchants, grocery stores and pie shops where you will sample traditional Greek food, including the ever-popular koulouri, a circular bread with sesame seeds. Our morning wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the vibrant Varvakeios food market, where you will have time to explore. Afterwards we will visit the city’s most historic neighborhoods, including Syntagma, Plaka, Anafiotika, Monastiraki and Psirri. Listen to peculiar stories from Greek Mythology, while you walk by ancient monuments like the Roman Market and Hadrian’s Library. Find out about a hidden alley that famous Greek festivities – Panathenaia – used to take place to honour goddess Athena and stroll around the most beautiful buildings of the city.

Day Seventeen // 6th August 2018
This morning we depart Athens, passing by Thermopylea to admire the statue of Leonidas, King of Sparta – before arriving in Meteora. The massive pinnacles of smooth rock are ancient and yet could be the setting for a futuristic science-fiction tale. The monasteries atop them add to the strange and beautiful landscape. In Meteora, the view of the plain is breathtaking.

Day Eighteen // 7th August 2018
As you leave Meteora this morning you will cross the mountains of central Greece, before arriving in the village of Delphi – the most visited archaeological site in Greece. Admire the Sanctuary of Apollo, walk the Sacred way and visit the temple of Apollo, home of Pythia (the oracle). Continue to the museum with one the finest famous bronze statue of the Charioteer. This afternoon is at leisure before enjoying a dinner overlooking the Corinthian gulf.

Day Nineteen // 8th August 2018
Today we will travel towards the Peloponnese, stopping at the mountain village of Arachova – a famous weekend retreat for the Athenian over the winter months. Take a walk to explore the village, known for the production of local cheese, pasta and rugs. Journey onto the monastery of Ossios Loukas, hidden in the mountains of central Greece, in a quiet and relaxing setting – admire the unique frescoes and mosaics and feel the Devine atmosphere. Drive along the coast road of Attica with views to the Saronic gulf and the islands of Salamis. Here we will have a short photo stop at the Corinth canal before  we continue across the Arcadian mountains to arrive in Dimitsana. Built amphitheatrically on two hills at the beginning of the Lousios Gorge, Dimitsana, is a delightful medieval village. After arriving at our hotel, we will have a welcome dinner and drinks at a local traditional taverna.

Day Twenty // 9th August 2018
The Peloponnese has a wild, untamed beauty perfectly reflected in its mountain villages like Dimitsana. After breakfast start a walking tour of this village which will reveal its unique spirit. Our adventure today includes a visit the unique open-air Water Power Museum. Later, proceed to a local family tavern – learn the secrets of making “pastitsio” and authentic Greek plate before getting to enjoy the fulfilling meal.

Day Twenty-One // 10th August 2018
Start the day with a visit to Bassae – the first UNESCO World Heritage Site of Greece – an awe-inspiring archaeological site on a remote mountain top. The well-preserved Temple of Apollo Epicurius occupies a commanding view overlooking the Aegean Sea, far to the south. Later, taste a variety of more traditional products, made exclusively by the local women. Enjoy a delicious lunch and watch an unusual but interesting museum demonstrating the life of the small mountain village Andritsena. Continue to Vytina for a short walking tour of the city, finishing with a traditional local taverna.

Day Twenty-Two // 11th August 2018
Today visit Ancient Olympia, one of the most picturesque bucolic sites in Greece. This is the site of the ancient Olympic Games, which were celebrated every four years by the Greeks. Olympia was a national shrine of the Greeks and contained many treasures of Greek art, such as temples, monuments, altars, theatres, statues, and votive offerings of brass and marble. We will take a complete tour of the famous archaeological site and museum, before visiting a local farm producing both olive oil and wine. We can taste some of the wines and many different dishes, all handmade using fresh products from the farm. After lunch return to Dimitsana via scenic narrow roads through the vineyards, fig tree groves and fields full of sunflowers.

Day Twenty-Three // 12th August 2018
A gentle hike into the Lousios Gorg is the best way to explore the pristine nature of the Peloponnese heartland. Descending into the Gorge is like floating into a familiar yet foreign past. The monks built the monasteries to prevent raids from Venetian pirates and for peaceful meditation. You will visit and meet the monks who live there, persisting in an ascetic life as they have for hundreds of years. Tonight, is at leisure and a great chance to sample local tavernas you spotted during the day.

Day Twenty-Four // 13th August 2018
Depart for the beautiful seaside town of Nafplio. On the way, visit the Ancient Nemea, the place where the Nemean Games were once held, similar to the Olympic Games. Today, Nemea is also known for its exceptional wines and we will visit one of the most esteemed wineries for wine tasting and lunch. We Continuing to Mycenae, one of the major ancient centres of Greek Civilisation and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Trojan Wars began here and Homer’s inspiration for The Iliad and The Odyssey sprang from Mycenae. The old stones speak volumes and is an amazing visit before arriving in Nafplio. Please note that due to the options in Nafplio, our hotel is of a 3star standard.

Day Twenty-Five // 14th August 2018
Nafplio is one of the most beautiful towns in Greece. It occupies a knockout location on a small port beneath the towering Palamidi fortress. It is graced with attractive narrow streets, elegant Venetian houses, neoclassical mansions and interesting museums. A walking tour will give you the change to experience it’s beauty before leaving for an afternoon tour of Epidaurus. On the way back to Nafplio we will visit the small seaside town of Tolo and enjoy a relaxing seafood lunch. Tonight is at leisure and a wonderful opportunity to wander along the harbour front of Nafplio.

Day Twenty-Six // 15th August 2018
After breakfast we will board a private boat for a tour of Bourtzi – a small islet located at the entrance of Nafplio’s picturesque harbour. An old venetian Fortress completely occupies the islet to which it owes its name. Later, take a short visit to a beautiful beach to relax under the bright Greek sun with plenty of time for a swim. As our wonderful tour comes to an end, tonight we will have a special farewell dinner at one of the city’s best restaurants. It is a fitting way to say Opa! to the Peloponnesus.
