JTW 2020 – Central Europe

Central Europe is a stunning mix of breathtaking scenery, sophisticated culture and historical architecture. From Germany’s serene beauty, cultured cities and half-timbered towns, to Austria’s stunning city of Vienna and mountain villages to Switzerland’s alpine region and urban culture and finally the Netherland’s Amsterdam, one of the most fascinating cities in Europe. We’ll experience these four gorgeous countries by rail, cruise and overland travel, in a 31 day tour that will leave no stone unturned in these fascinating countries.

Day One — Sep 2 2020
We welcome you the moment we pick you up from your home address and transfer to Sydney International Airport for our overnight flight.

Day Two — Sep 3 2020
We arrive into bustling Amsterdam, famous for its artistic heritage, famous canals and houseboats, coffee shops and of course, the red light district. This evening, we spend time exploring the city’s picturesque historic canal district, from our starlight dinner cruise, and finish our day with a walk through Amsterdam’s most fascinating and oldest area, the Red Light District.

Day Three — Sep 4 2020
Leaving Amsterdam behind for the day, we get a taste of the Dutch countryside. Our day starts with a visit to the traditional fishing villages of Volendam, and stroll through the world-famous windmill village of Zaanse Schans. We visit a cheese factory for a tasting, before lunch at a local restaurant. We watch craftsmen make wooden shoes, visit the village of Broek (the gem of Waterland) before relaxing on the ride back to Amsterdam. Once we arrive back in Amsterdam, we’ll take a short walking tour of the main city centre.

Day Four — Sep 5 2020
Before we start the next part of our adventure, boarding our river cruise, we’ll take time to visit the Riijksmuseum where works by famous artists are displayed, including works by Ruisdael, Vermeer, and Rembrandt. Afterwards, we board our 8 day cruise which will take us from Amsterdam to Zurich, exploring 6 different cities, towns and villages along the way. Unpack once and relax on board as you experience the daily life of river cruising. Daily activities on this cruise have been included, however additional optional tours are available at an additional cost.

Day Five — Sep 6 2020
This morning you can decide to either enjoy a glass top canal boat tour through Amsterdam’s canal or a guided bike tour. This evening will be our first day sailing through the Dutch countryside passing windmills and sailing through locks towards the Rhine River. Tonight, the captain hosts our gala dinner onboard.

Day Six — Sep 7 2020
Cruise along the Rhine River to Cologne, founded by the Romans, the city is one of Germany’s oldest and is famous for its magnificent World–Heritage listed Gothic Cathedral. After lunch on board, we take a tour of the Old Town, with free time for exploring. Cologne is one of Germany’s largest and most modern cities largely due to a rebuilding plan post WWII, and it has many different museums and galleries.

Day Seven — Sep 8 2020
Cruise to the 2000-year-old town of Koblenz, which is situated at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers. You will have a tour of Koblenz and visit the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress on the opposite side of the river. This fortress was part of the Prussian defences against the French in the 19th century and later used as a headquarters for the American military during WWII. In the afternoon, sail through the spectacular Rhine Gorge, passing countless castles and vineyards as well as the infamous Lorelei statue and Pfalzgrafenstein Castle, which was built on an island in the middle of the river as a medieval toll station. Countless vineyards and medieval castles line the shores of this section of the river, with photo opportunities at every bend

Day Eight —Sep 9 2020
Continue upstream to the town of Mannheim, located at the confluence of the Rhine and Neckar rivers. There you will have a chance to either visit the medieval town of Heidelberg including the impressive castle which overlooks the town or take part on an active hike to Heidelberg Hill.

Day Nine — Sep 10 2020
Once docked in Kehl you will be transferred by coach across the river to Strasbourg, the capital city of the Alsace Region in France. Your guided walking tour will include the Grande Île, the historical city centre and UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its medieval black and white timber framed buildings, old tanning houses, baroque sandstones buildings, canals and river locks.

Day Ten — Sep 11 2020
Today you will visit a typical black forest village, full of charm and many Cuckoo clocks and other German specialties. Alternatively, take part on a guided hike through some of the black forest trails.

Day Eleven — Sep 12 2020
Welcome to Switzerland and the Rhine–side town of Basel, the centre for Switzerland’s pharmaceutical industry. After, your breakfast you will disembark your ship and travel to Interlaken, which lies in the Bernese Oberland on an alluvial plain, between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, renowned for its impressive mountain scenery.

Day Twelve — Sep 13 2020
Today we explore the Glacier Canyon, an impressive masterpiece of nature formed by the lower Grindelwald glacier. This evening, we enjoy a gondola trip to our walk to the edge the Cliff Walkway to view impressive rocks with their layers and niches which serve as a take-off and landing place for the alpine choughs.

Day Thirteen — Sep 14 2020
Today our destination is Lucerne, but our adventure begins when we board the scenic rail and take in the breathtaking views from Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen.  We stop at Jungfraujoch also known as “The Top of Europe”, before reaching our destination, Lucerne, gateway to central Switzerland and embedded within an impressive mountainous panorama.

Day Fourteen — Sep 15 2020
Wake up to one of the most beautiful of Switzerland’s city’s, Lucerne. We explore the magnificent views at every turn of this city.  From the cobalt lake ringed by mountains, to the beautiful town, covered bridges and waterfront promenades. Popular with the rich, the famous and the Royal since the 19th Century Lucerne will take your breath away.

Day Fifteen — Sep 16 2020
Today we travel from Lucerne to Innsbruck, travelling through Liechtenstein, which at only 25km long, is a tiny principality that sits between Austria and Germany. You can even pay to get an extra stamp in your passport so say you’ve visited another country. We’ll arrive in Innsbruck for the night and prepare for a terrific day tomorrow.

Day Sixteen — Sep 17 2020
Innsbruck is mountainous, and it’s no surprise it’s referred to as ‘The Capital of the Alps’.  From the dazzling scenery of peaks and alpine forests that hug the city, we’ll step indoors to the dazzling world of Swarovski, curated by international artists at the Swarovski Crystal World Museum. This evening we view Innsbruck’s most famous landmark, the Goldenese Dachl before experiencing breathtaking 360° views from above from a cable car as we make our way to the “Top of Innsbruck”.  The view will take your breath away with capital of the Alps on one side and Tyrol’s most extensive conservation area on the other.

Today we travel to Vienna! Vienna’s breathtaking beauty, rich cultural legacy, artistic masterpieces and world-renowned prosperity make this a fascinating and absorbing travel destination.

Day Eighteen — Sep 19 2020
Today we explore the delightful city of Vienna, with highlights including the views of the Hofburg, St Stephens Cathedral and the Ferris Wheel in Prater Park. During free time this afternoon explore the gorgeous streets and shops of this super city.

Day Nineteen — Sep 20 2020
Prepare for a visual feast as we enter Schonbrunn Palace, one of the most majestic buildings in Vienna. The history of Schönbrunn and the buildings that previously stood on this site dates back to the fourteenth century.  We lunch at one of Austria’s most stunning cafés, the Sacher Café, with its ornately decorated walls and ceiling and shimmering chandeliers. To complete the day’s sophisticated activities, this afternoon we have the pleasure of visiting a local wine cellar for a tasting.

Day Twenty — Sep 21 2020
This morning we travel to stunning Salzburg, an Austrian city on the border of Germany, with views of the Eastern Alps and made famous by the classic musical “The Sound of Music”. We visit the stunning Lake District and see the gazebo where ‘Sixteen Going on Seventeen’ was shot. We’ll wander through the colourful Mirabell Gardens and view what has been called one of the most beautiful chapels in the world before stopping for a photo at Lakeshore and attending a Mozart concert at the Hohensalzburg Fortress.

Day Twenty-One — Sep 22 2020
Today’s tour is fascinating, as we journey into the world of salt in the Berchtesgaden Salt Mines, the oldest active salt mine in Germany and nestled in a unique atmosphere deep in the Bavarian Alps. From here we make our way high up to The Eagles Nest taking in the breathtaking panoramic views of the historical viewpoint above Berchtesgaden. Later, we’ll visit the beautiful Gollinger Waterfall and explore the natural limestone and ice-caves at Eisriesenwelt.

Day Twenty-Two — Sep 23 2020
Today we tantalise our taste buds and learn how to cook the famous Apple Strudel and Salzburg Nockel at a hands-on cooking class before we travel to Munich, a city of tankards and high-tech cars, edgy art and lederhosen. Munich is a city where traditional ways and modern living come together to create a warm, vibrant city.

Day Twenty-Three — Sep 24 2020
Today’s Munich adventure starts with a scenic stroll to the Victory Arch, a war-torn triumphal arch that tells much of Munich, and Germany’s, history. We also visit the Olympic Stadium and Tower. The Olympiaturm stands high above the city of Munich, more than 955 feet (291.1 meters) and along with being an observation point, is also used as a communications broadcast tower.

Day Twenty-Four — Sep 25 2020
Today we touch on a little magic, when we take an enchanting horse & carriage ride up to the Neuschwanstein Castle, a 19th century castle said to be the inspiration for Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty castle.  Unlike other castle’s built for strategic or defence purposes it was built mainly to create something of beauty.  Continuing our charming theme, we continue to Linderhof Palace, one of the most artistic and stylistically complex Palaces of the 19th century.

Day Twenty-Five — Sep 26 2020
Today we journey to Nuremburg in Northern Bavaria but firstly we stop at Rothenburg-ob-der-Tauber, half active workplace, half museum where we will find numerous artisans at work, including coopers, weavers, cobblers and potters as has been the custom here for more than 700 years. Over lunch we’ll enjoy classic views from the Elbe’s northern bank taking in spires, towers and domes belonging to palaces, churches and stately buildings. After lunch we continue with our journey to Nuremburg, famously known for the Nuremburg trials held to bring Nazi war criminals to justice after
World War II.

Day Twenty-Six — Sep 27 2020
Today we immerse ourselves in history and visit the Germanisches National museum. This is a must-see stop for any trip to Nuremberg. Witness the Memorium Nuremberg Museum and explore the Nazi Party Rally Grounds site.  Here you will see where the construction began on monumental buildings for the party’s mass meetings and even today, the remains of huge structures bear witness to the megalomania of the National Socialist regime.

Day Twenty-Seven — Sep 28 2020
This morning we travel to fascinating Berlin, Germany’s capital, a city shaped by conflict and turmoil which has emerged as a vibrant culture unified by its complex history to become a powerful economic and cultural centre. By far the largest city in Germany, Berlin is both beautiful and intriguing. Making a stop along the way, we visit the small town of Dresden, a beautiful city rich in art treasures where we will have lunch.

Day Twenty-Eight — Sep 29 2020
This morning we explore Berlin and Brandenburg Gate is the first stop! This iconic landmark offers fascinating insights into the city’s history. After we visit the Reichstag the German Parliament building we will experience the emotion of the Holocaust Memorial, commemorating Jewish victims of the Nazi Holocaust. We walk through Checkpoint Charlie, the setting for many spy novels, and make a visit to the Topography of Terror and Berlin Wall Memorial both places of remembrance and steeped in history.

Day Twenty-Nine — Sep 30 2020
Our final full day in Berlin starts with a visit to one of Berlin’s most famous landmarks, the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church in Kurfurstendamm.  From here we explore the Kreuzberg district, an alternate cultural hub that has a vibrant musical and art scene. A change of pace sees us visit the Sachsenhausen concentration camp, located North of Berlin and which was the principal concentration camp for the Berlin area. This evening our last dinner of our tour is a cruise down the River Spree where we will a lovely 3 course meal while soaking up the European atmosphere for one last time.

Day Thirty — Oct 1 2020
This morning we say farewell to Berlin, before making our way to the airport for our flight home.

Today we arrive into Sydney International Airport where we will transfer you to your home address and you can take time to remember the amazing experiences you’ve had and the wonderful people you’ve met on your amazing tour of Central Europe.

Please note that we will not have our airline schedule until 11 months prior to departure. You may arrive into Sydney on the morning of the 3rd October, depending on schedules.
